CCHIT Certification
and what makes it significant
Abraxas Medical Solutions is proud to announce that its Electronic Health Records software, Abraxas EMR, version 4.1, is a CCHIT Certified 08 Ambulatory EHR.
Who is CCHIT?
The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, CCHIT®, is a private, nonprofit organization that has been named by the federal government as the Recognized Certification Body for health information technology. The commission is endorsed by a number of professional organizations such as AAFP, AAP, ACOG, ACC, AMA, MGMA and ACP.
Is there any other certification body?
At the present time CCHIT EHR certification is the only certification for meeting certain standards in our industry.
In addition, most industry experts believe that CCHIT will be the certifying body for the recent Economic Stimulus Plan.
What is CCHIT’s mission?
CCHIT’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of health information technology in the healthcare industry by creating a credible, sustainable certification program.
What are CCHIT’s goals?
The goals of CCHIT product certification are to:
- Reduce the risk of health IT investment by providers
- Ensure interoperability (compatibility) of health IT products
- Enhance the availability of health IT adoption incentives from purchasers and payers
- Protect the privacy of personal health information
What is the highest level of Certification?
Currently the highest level of certification is CCHIT Certified 08® for Ambulatory EHRs.
Abraxas EMR, version 4.1, is a conditionally CCHIT Certified 08® Ambulatory EHR.
What does CCHIT Certification indicate about a product?
CCHIT Certification designates that an EMR/EHR software product has been tested and has passed inspection of 100 percent of the criteria concerning:
- Functionality:
Ability to create and manage electronic records for all patients, as well as automating workflow in a physician’s office
- Interoperability:
Ability to exchange information with other systems such as pharmacies and laboratories
- Security:
Ability to protect patients’ information
What does CCHIT Certification indicate about a company?
Currently, fewer than 10% of EMR/EHR vendors in the market have CCHIT certification. Potential buyers should understand why so few have achieved this critical milestone. Qualifying for the testing process, the testing process itself and passing the testing process involve considerable resources and expenses.
- Vendor Financial Viability:
CCHIT certification can be an indicator of a vendor’s financial viability. The process of becoming certified is expensive both in cash outlays and labor effort.
- Vendor Commitment to the Market:
Along with the cost incurred by the vendor, the certification process involves considerable outlay of effort and technical resources. Passing certification is an indicator of a Vendor’s commitment to the EHR user community.
